FORMER Hibs striker Leigh Griffiths insisted he was only “defending his family” as he walked free from court after assault charges were dropped.

The Celtic and Scotland player, 23, had denied attacking a 22-year-old man on North Bridge last year.

But after it was revealed two witnesses had not been cited to appear at Edinburgh’s Justice of the Peace Court yesterday, the case was thrown out.

Griffiths said he and his family were subjected to verbal abuse by his alleged assault victim, and added: “It was what any dad would do.

“The police said they knew it was a stupid incident, but they had to do their job.”
