LIBRARY chiefs have struck gold and scooped a prestigious national gong from the Bookseller Industry Awards.

The council-run Midlothian Libraries service landed library of the year in the coveted awards, which were announced in London.

It saw off competition from the largest public library in the world, in Birmingham, after wowing judges with its “hugely impressive” programme of events.

Midlothian Council leader Councillor Owen Thompson, cabinet member for libraries, said: “Our library staff work very hard throughout the year to make our libraries a great place to visit.”
