With leafy countryside, picturesque beaches and stunning views across the region, some of the most scenic locations in Lothians are best seen on horseback and with dozens of schools, it is easy to learn.

Here are our recommendations for the best places to learn to ride in the Lothians.

At Lasswade Riding School, beginner riders aged from two years old can be booked in for a ‘once in a lifetime experience,’ but the school also caters for those with much more experience in the saddle, offering off-road hacking and trekking. The school - which has facilities for training both indoor and outdoor riders - also provides horses for beach rides, country rides and all border common ridings, while ponies are provided for Gala Days and birthday parties.

Offering something slightly different from the usual track riding, Harelaw Equestrian Centre offers even novice riders the opportunity to take to the beaches of East Lothian. The school does specialise in weight-carrying Irish draft horses, but ponies are also available for those looking for a little bit of a lighter trekking experience.

Established in 1972 by husband and wife team Ian & Elizabeth Comrie, Houston has retained its affordable family aesthetic.

The well-respected school is approved by the Association of British Riding Schools and the British Horse Society, so even beginner riders are in good hands.

With a wide choice of equestrian activities, Tower Farm is one of the largest riding schools in the region offering an array of classes for experienced riders and beginners. Formed in 1972, the club participates in competitions, but offers fun days for those not looking for competitive action.

Lasswade riding stables

Based on the Drum Estate, Drum RDA gives over 200 riders the opportunity to hone their skills every year, with riders working towards their Endeavour Award and Riding & Horse Care Certificates. The school will even support some of their students in regional dressage competitions and has a trophy cabinet to prove its success.
