Luxury apartment in historic country house up for sale

A LUXURY apartment in a historic East Lothian country house has been put up for sale at offers over £1 million.

Whittingehame House, near Haddington, was home to former British prime minister Arthur Balfour who served between 1902 and 1905.

The first-floor apartment boasts three bedrooms, two reception rooms and a library.

The property also includes a balcony and access to 16 acres of gardens.

Property agents Savills said Whittingehame is expected to attract considerable interest.

Past visitors included William Gladstone, Winston Churchill, Lloyd George and Herbert Asquith.

After Lord Balfour’s death in 1930 the family fortune had diminished and the estate had to be sold, becoming a farm training centre for Jewish refugee children during the Second World War.

Prior to becoming apartments in 1986, the estate was owned by an Arab sheikh.
