Lynne McCrossan: It’s time for mourning in the church of Apple

If something looks good in life people will lust after it. Marry beauty with practicality and you’re guaranteed a global smash.

That’s what Steve Jobs did. He created a company that cares about design and because of that he changed the way the world does things.

Every day in Edinburgh I see Steve’s influence in the hands of people he’d never met.

It’s across from me in coffee shop as people flick through the morning papers on their iPad. It’s sitting beside me in rush hour traffic on a packed bus as people play music to preserve their privacy. And it is slowing me down in Princes Street as tourists snap our landmarks using their phones.

Even now his presence is felt as I write today’s column in notepad on my phone. From there it’s simply emailed to the office from wherever I am. My desk is always at my finger-tips.

He’s given us a mini computer in our pockets. And more importantly he made it beautiful.

He coined “geek chic”, a phrase I doubt we’d even have heard of had Steve never dreamed up Apple. So from all of us who worship daily in the church of Apple, thank you Mr Jobs, and good night.
