It is understood that Mr Dixon is still in hospital following the incident.

Residents said the area had recently been “a mess” and told how there had been a rowdy party the night of the attack.

Parts of Niddrie House Park, leading on to Niddrie Marischal Drive, were cordoned off while police continued their investigations on Friday night.

One local resident said: “It’s a mess. I saw police crawling all over the place and the street was taped off. It’s not the first time we’ve had trouble in recent weeks. People don’t like to talk about it.”

There seems to be a gang that is always hanging around, you see them on the street. Police said there had been over 100 break-ins in the last few months. The place needs to be sorted out.”

Police said investigations into the attack on Mr Dixon were ongoing and confirmed that no arrests had been made.
