Paramedics initially declared the man’s condition to be “critical” as specialist firefighters rushed to the scene.

However, shortly after 2pm, a police spokesman said: “A man has died as a result of a fall. We are not treating his death as suspicious.”

Firefighters also returned to the park later in the day to rescue a 23-year-old who had injured an ankle.

The man was secured in a basket and lowered 100ft to the ground below, directly opposite the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

He was then taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
