A MAN has been arrested after people were apparently attacked at a dance studio in the Grassmarket.

The disturbance began outside Dance Base around lunch time today.

Eyewitnesses said the man tried to steal a woman’s handbag and then ran into the dance studio to hide from police.

One of them, student Marc Gilbert, 20, said: “I heard people arguing and looked over and there was a guy fighting with a group of people that looked like they were maybe couples in their 50s. The guy was maybe in his 30s.

“It looked like he had tried to steal one of the woman’s handbags and they were fighting back.”

Another witness, who asked not to be named, said: “I came out on to the street and there was people arguing and then I saw the guy run into the studio. The next thing he was being brought out by police.

“It was quite scary actually. I didn’t really know what was happening, and there was a bunch of police everywhere.”

Police attended at around 2pm and confirmed that a man had been detained.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A male has currently been detained following a disturbance on the Grassmarket, where a number of people reported being assaulted.”
