Man hospitalised as fire crews tackle garage blaze

DOZENS of firefighters were called out to tackle a massive blaze in a garage south of the Capital.

Fire crews, specialist medic teams and police rushed to a single-storey building in Old Dalkeith Road after an emergency call was received at around 10am yesterday. A man said to be in his late fifties was rushed from the scene to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and treated for smoke inhalation.

Smoke from the huge blaze also drifted across the nearby road, which was closed northbound at Shawfair Park and Ride by police.

Buses were also diverted and the building was later declared unsafe after it partially collapsed

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue, which sent 40 firefighters to the scene, said it was unclear how the fire started, and added: “The building was well alight and there was heavy smoke, which is reflected in the number of firefighters we had there.”
