AN argument over music between two friends ended up with a stabbing, a court heard.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, 28-year-old Daniel Gaffney was jailed for 15 months after pleading guilty to assaulting James McDonagh on September 3 by repeatedly punching his head and stabbing him to his severe injury.

Gaffney also admitted struggling with police officers and assaulting Pc Vincent Bird in Dalkeith Police Station by headbutting him in the face.

Defence solicitor Paul Smith said the men had been good friends for ten years. They had been drinking together at Mr McDonagh’s house and then went to Gaffney’s home in Whitecraig, East Lothian, and continued drinking.

Sheriff Holligan jailed Gaffney for 15 months on the stabbing charge and sentenced him to 25 days for headbutting Pc Bird.
