Many youths ‘unsuitable’ for workplace

MOST young Scots are “unsuitable” for the modern workplace, one of the country’s biggest companies has said.

The claim from motoring giant Arnold Clark appears in a hard-hitting report submitted to MSPs and comes after the firm received 2280 apprenticeship applications last year but found 1850 were unemployable.

The company, Europe’s largest independently-owned motor dealer, said the biggest difficulty was apprentices failing to adjust to a full working week after studying 18 hours a week or less in further education.

The report was submitted ahead of a major summit to be staged by Holyrood’s finance committee tomorrow in which politicians and businesses will address the “employability” of the Scottish workforce.

The submission said: “We are increasingly concerned at the state-sponsored babysitting nature of some college programmes.”
