McLetchie unites with SNP MSP to chop down hedges

LOTHIANS Conservative MSP David McLetchie said today he would work with an SNP backbencher in telling the Scottish Parliament he planned to bring a member’s bill to tackle the problem of high hedges.

Thousands of people across Scotland are affected by giant trees and hedges blocking their views or keeping their homes in permanent darkness.

The Evening News revealed yesterday that Mr McLetchie was preparing to put forward a new law to give people the right to go to court for an order to force neighbours to cut such hedges down to size after the Scottish Government failed to include such a measure in its legislative programme.

But before he had a chance to make any formal moves, North East SNP MSP Mark McDonald announced he was planning his own bill on the issue with government blessing.

Mr McLetchie said: “This is not a competition about claiming credit, it’s about getting the thing done.

“I’m going to meet Mark next week and between us we’ll get it sorted.”
