MoonWalk's cup runneth over as stars design bras

THEY have plenty experience of underwear being thrown at them on stage as they romped through hits like Bye Bye Baby and Shang-a-Lang.

But now the Bay City Rollers are to do their bit for a breast cancer charity after agreeing to have a one-of-a-kind bra created in their honour.

The recently reunited 1970s pop idols are among the big names who have thrown their weight behind the first ever fashion show being staged for the organisers of The MoonWalk event next month.

Tennis coach Judy Murray and television presenter Lorraine Kelly have also agreed to back the event, which will see models sporting a series of specially-designed bras on the catwalk.

Leading fashion designers Judy R Clark, whose outfits have been worn by Nicola Sturgeon, and Hayley Scanlan will be among those creating some of the other bras, which will all be auctioned off on the night.

Historic Princes Street department store Jenners will be creating a special window display to showcase the unique underwear ahead of the event, which is expected to be a highlight of Edinburgh Fashion Week.

Ms Murray’s involvement in the fundraiser for MoonWalk charity Walk the Walk has been revealed days before fashion icon the Duchess of Cambridge is due to take part in one of her tennis workshops in Edinburgh.

Ms Murray, who has designed a special tennis-themed bra for the fashion show and auction, said: “It’s lovely to be able to support such a wonderful cause and in such an unusual way.

“I’ve had a lot of fun designing this tennis-themed bra for auction at Edinburgh Fashion Week and hope it will not only raise even more money for Walk the Walk, but also help increase awareness for breast cancer.”

A spokesman for the Bay City Rollers, who reunited late last year for their first tour in more than 40 years, said: “Everybody knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer and we are delighted to do our bit in raising awareness. We’ve had the odd bra or two being thrown on stage over the years so it’s great to throw one back for such a cause.”

Ms Kelly, a long-time backer of the Walk the Walk charity, has joined forces with luxury fashion brand Barbour to create her bra. She said: “Two of my favourite things are fashion and raising awareness for breast cancer, so what a fantastic idea to combine Edinburgh Fashion Week and The MoonWalk by auctioning specially-designed bras.”

The event for Walk the Walk, which has raised more than £18 million through its MoonWalk events in Scotland, will be staged next to the Scottish National Gallery on The Mound on March 5 in a specially-created Edinburgh Fashion Week arena.

Walk the Walk founder Nina Barough said: “We are incredibly proud of not only what we have achieved but the support we receive from different sectors of the Scottish communities.”
