THE number of disabled people in Edinburgh choosing to use government cash to hire their own carers has increased four-fold, according to a local charity.

The Learning Disability Alliance, based in Dalkeith, said twice as many people in the Capital were choosing to take the direct payments route than elsewhere in Scotland.

But the charity warned that local authorities and the Scottish Government should ensure such care does not become an administrative burden on individuals.
