MP makes plea over global arms treaty

East Lothian MP Fiona O’Donnell has urged people to put pressure on the foreign secretary as part of Oxfam’s campaign for the first global arms treaty.

Thousands of people worldwide have called for an end to the unregulated trade of guns, bombs and bullets by signing up to the campaign.

But Ms O’Donnell said delays and disagreements had left the UN Arms Treaty Conference in New York off track, and urged campaigners to demand that William Hague uses his influence to ensure it is a success.

She said: “Across the world 2000 people die each day from armed violence, with 26 million people currently displaced within their own countries.”
