‘Mrs Brown’ on the block

AN oil painting of Queen Victoria and her servant, John Brown, is expected to fetch up to £30,000 when it goes under the hammer at the Lyon & Turnbull’s auctionhouse in Edinburgh next month.

The artwork, by Charles Burton Barber, was a gift from Victoria to Brown and shows the pair on August 26, 1876, the year Brown celebrated his 50th birthday.

Barber’s picture is among 500 items from Old Battersea House, the London home of the Forbes family, the US publishing dynasty.
