MSP calls for tuition fee cap for English

Labour’S Malcolm Chisholm today called on the Scottish Government to cap tuition fees for English students and then move to a flat-rate charge with the cash being shared out.

Edinburgh University is at the centre of controversy after it set fees for students from the rest of the UK at the maximum £36,000 for a four-year course.

The Edinburgh Northern & Leith MSP said he accepted there had to be a charge for English students, but it was “unacceptable” to make them pay more than the maximum south of the border.

“The fee should be capped at £27,000, but I would like to see a flat-rate fee and the money distributed in accordance with a fair funding formula which would prevent an incentive for universities to recruit more English students.”
