THE naming of Olympic legend Eric Liddell as the winner of the Evening News’ search for Edinburgh’s Greatest has been hailed at Holyrood.
Edinburgh Southern SNP MSP Jim Eadie has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament, applauding the gold medallist – immortalised in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire – on his contribution and achievements both as a sportsman and as a missionary in China.
Others in the top ten of Edinburgh’s Greatest included Elsie Inglis, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Graham Bell and JK Rowling.
Mr Eadie said: “I am delighted to learn that Eric Liddell has emerged as Edinburgh’s Greatest, an award befitting of his many accomplishments.
“The Edinburgh’s Greatest poll has given us all the opportunity to celebrate the numerous successes and achievements of people who have strong ties with our capital city. It is clear Edinburgh has a great track record in producing truly outstanding individuals, and I hope this trend may continue for generations to come.”
