MSP urges action into female employment

Have your say

LOTHIAN Green MSP Alison Johnstone has called for more action to help women into work after a damning report was published.

The Fawcett Society said 60 per cent of all jobs since 2010 had gone to men.

Ms Johnstone, a member of the Scottish Parliament economy committee, said: “This is a wake-up call for both the Westminster and Scottish governments. It’s yet further proof the coalition’s austerity agenda is adding to our unequal society, and it should prompt SNP ministers to think carefully about their efforts.

“More than 98 per cent of engineering, plumbing and construction apprentices are young men, whereas less secure, lower-paid roles in hairdressing, childcare and social care tend to be taken up by young women.”
