Muirfield to hold talks on admitting women golfers

AN exclusive golf club is set to vote on whether to admit women for the first time.

The Royal & Ancient golf club, in St Andrews, is expected to make the move for female members when it holds a vote on Thursday – a change that would allow women to join the club for the first time in its 260-year history.

And the major shake-up could see the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (HCEG) at Muirfield, in East Lothian, follow suit as it has commissioned an external company to carry out a consultation on whether women should be allowed to join.

A spokesman for the HCEG said: “All HCEG members will be invited to participate and the process will start in late September 2014, by which time the R&A decision concerning women members will be known.”

The finished report will be produced by March 2015 and considered by the HCEG in the spring.
