A FREE exhibition celebrating the work of an Edinburgh man who re-shaped naval warfare is on show in the Capital.

John Clerk of Eldin was better known for his essay on Naval Tactics, than he was for his landscape etchings. However, in a prolific etching career, he produced more than 100 prints, many of which are now on display in the City Art Centre. Clerk was self-taught and most of his works are of Scottish scenes.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Culture and Leisure Convener, said: “Having been credited with helping Nelson in his battles against the French and widely praised for his illustrations in James Hutton’s Theory of Earth, it’s breathtaking to think that we’re able to enjoy the product from yet another part of his colourful life.”
