New dad dies on holiday in Spain days after street attack

An Edinburgh man who had just become a father to a baby boy has died on a Spanish holiday after being attacked.

Chris Lindsay, 34, was found unconscious in the street after a night out with colleagues.

It is believed the group had gone for a meal, after which most went to bed, but Chris and a senior colleague decided to go back out.

The pair became separated and Chris was found unconscious in the early morning, it was reported today.

He was taken to hospital in Marbella before being transferred to Malaga. He died last Friday after suffering liver and kidney failure.

It is not known how he sustained his injuries or how he got to the hospital.

His brother Tony, 38, said: “I am absolutely devastated. Chris was absolutely thrilled to have become a dad again.

“There are too many question marks about what happened.

“We don’t know who found him but he had been unconscious in the street on the Sunday morning and his passport was missing.

“When we saw him there, his face was OK but there was bad bruising down his right-hand side and cuts on his knees and elbows.

“We have no idea if he was jumped on or if it was a one-on-one, but he had certainly been in a fight.”

Chris’ father Harry, 63, a care worker from Airdrie, was reported as saying: “We are going about in a trance at the moment.

“Chris was a hard worker and a good lad.”

Police on the Costa del Sol are investigating the incident.

His family and girlfriend Vikky Solomon hope a postmortem will shed more light on what happened.

His body will remain in Spain until officers decide whether to launch a criminal inquiry.

Chris, who three-months ago became a father to Jude, had flown to Spain with colleagues from The Marketing Company, based in Glasgow’s Hope Street, it was reported today.

On his company’s website, ambitious Chris, who had previously worked for Scottish Hydro, said his passion was working with and training people.

“My long-term goal is to be the number one owner in the Marketing Company Scotland, and with so many ambitious and successful owners already, it’s going to be tough, but I’m so determined to achieve it.

After I am number one owner I hope to then promote another four owners and open four offices within a year.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain.

“We are providing consular assistance to the family.”
