Old electric blankets put to the test

AN electric blanket testing day for older people is to be held by the Fire Service in West Lothian.

Watch commander at Livingston Fire Station Keith Taylor said: “We can test a maximum of 80 blankets on the day, which is why we are asking people to book in advance. We will also be providing advice from the Electrical Safety Council.

“Electric blankets are popular, especially with older people, but if they were manufactured years ago or have been stored incorrectly there may be a risk that they could spark a fire.

“Although the number of recorded fires caused by electric blankets is relatively low in Scotland there were two fatalities in Scotland in 2009-10 where the source of ignition for the fire was given as an electric blanket.”

The event will take place at the Almondvale Centre, Livingston, on October 13. To book a test, call Livingston Fire Station on 01506 432514.
