‘Isn’t dreaming part of being a football fan?’

it is a dream which unites the Capital – even if most of us hardly dare believe it could come true.

The first all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup final for 116 years remains on the cards ahead of this weekend’s semi-finals.

If Hibs overcome Aberdeen, and Hearts upset Celtic, then around 50,000 will be heading down the M8 and packing out trains for a big day at Hampden.

But should the fans have to trek across the country? Or would it be better to stage the final at Murrayfield in the event it is an all-Capital affair?

Councillors Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh’s deputy leader, and Paul McLellan, leader of East Lothian Council, say the fans should be allowed to decide.

The superstitious, and pessimistic, will say it is too early for such a debate.

But if things go our way on the pitch then it will have to start in earnest on Monday if there is to be any chance of persuading the Scottish Football Association to switch venues.

And, besides, isn’t dreaming dreams a part of what being a football fan is all about?

Stop and think for a moment how great it would be.

Some will fear the high stakes – dreading the pain that will come with losing to your nearest rivals.

But the excitement would grip everyone, not just football fans, the whole city would be buzzing.

And picture Murrayfield in the sun, one half decked in maroon, the other green and white.

Hampden? Well, isn’t that a crucial part of the occasion? Wouldn’t most fans prefer to have their day out at the historic home of football?

But first we have the semis . . . C’mon Hearts and c’mon Hibs!

They don’t always get the best PR but today there is proof if needed that our long-suffering cabbies are always willing to go beyond the call of duty.

As well as negotiating Edinburgh’s constantly changing road layout, they have to act as everything from tourist guides and ambassadors to marriage counsellors and psychologists as they help keep the city moving.

As we report today, Alan Simpson can add midwife to his list of talents after his heroics this week. Well done to him for keeping a cool head when others may have run a mile.

There is at least one cab in the city this week where the main topic of conversation definitely won’t be the trams.
