Jonathan Melville: Please sir, we want some more

SINGING workhouse kids, bizarre dystopian worlds and animated Easter creatures can be found around Edinburgh cinemas this coming week, if you know where to look.

There’s still time to buy tickets for tonight’s screening of Tim Barrow’s The Space Between at the Cameo. This low-budget Edinburgh-set love story, starring Barrow as Steven and Vivien Reid as Lisa, is returning home after an impressive 47 screenings around Scotland since March 2011.

Part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, Uneasy Worlds is a series of screenings taking place at Summerhall (formerly the Dick Vet School near The Meadows) which explore the uneasy relationship between individuals and advancing industry, mechanisation and technology.

Films include 1927’s Metropolis, 1967’s Playtime and 1985’s Brazil, plus new documentary Abendland which looks at the growth of surveillance in our society. The season runs until Saturday and details are at www.sciencefestival.co.uk

There’s a chance for younger audiences to design and make their own Plasticine monster or Easter Bunny at the Filmhouse on Sunday from 2pm, at the aptly named Animated Easter Creatures workshop. Local animation company Red Kite will help children create their own 3D cartoons, all in the space of a few hours.

Staying at the Filmhouse, if you’re after some music to cheer you up, they have another of their celebrated singalongs on Sunday at 3.30pm for Carol Reed’s 1968 film, Oliver!

Featuring Lionel Bart’s memorable songs sung by Ron Moody, Oliver Reed and lead, Mark Lester, the words will be projected onto the screen and the audience can join in.

I’ve yet to make it to one of these – nobody wants to hear me singing – but the day they screen a singalong Muppet movie, I’ll be in the front row.
