Lynne McCrossan: Baby goes hell for leather on lovely couch

SITTING in the lounge was a once majestic piece of furniture.

Sculpted from the finest Italian leather, it was the couch of my dreams, bought in an independent boutique with a very limited manufacturing run.

Its rich chocolate brown exterior feels like butter to touch, making it my most expensive purchase to date.

The bevelled bottom sits high on carved wooden casters, giving the couch and huge one-seater the illusion of perching on some pretty spectacular shoes, then it juts out into puddles of padded leathers that you lose hours in while lounging.

Over the years the bulldog, Belfast boy and I have battered the bejesus out of it, but as with all truly great leather it looks better now than when we first met.

That was until I caught the latest member of the clan using it as a climbing frame so he could pull the poor puppy’s jowls.

The menace had manoeuvred his tiny hands and feet on to said bevelled detailing and was dangling between the couch and one-seater like Sly Stallone in Cliffhanger.

He’s not even a year old but he’s managed to make my stylish bespoke leather couch resemble a piece from Juggle Jim’s.

The couch will never look the same again.
