Lynne McCrossan: Bling and yang back in balance thanks to mice

Before the recession ravaged all our bank balances I was gifted a beautiful bag by a friend for Christmas.

It was 2007, a gay old time. Unbeknownst to us, a year to the day later we’d be welling up at work as management explained we were all being made redundant.

I had the bag in my hand at the time. Its lovely leather and hair hide exterior hand painted to simulate zebra print would become a symbol of excess we’ve long left behind.

I love it for so many reasons. Firstly, my dear friend bought me it. But more importantly it reminds me how fast fortune can change in the space of a year.

I dusted it down last week to take to a photoshoot. Its girthy width makes it the perfect Mary Poppins bag of tricks.

With clothes, shoes and accessories cramped in I promptly went for a caffeine and chocolate run to see me through the afternoon.

Spring was in the air and I felt on top of the world, counting my blessings as I went to work. There’s the baby, Belfast boy and I have just tied the knot plus he recently landed the job of his dreams which takes the pressure off a bit at home. Yes, 2012 has started out pretty perfect.

The next day I retrieved the bag from behind the couch. Remembering there was left over chocolate to be had. Except it had been had. Cheeky mice had nibbled their way through my Cadbury’s.

What was that I was saying about changes in fortune? The universe clearly felt I needed a bit of ying to counterbalance all the good yang!
