Lynne McCrossan: I’ve woken up to motherhood’s style cravings

BEING sleep deprived can do funny things to your sense of style. Suddenly sights you’d sworn were fashion suicide become second nature.

Like slippers under maxi skirts. If the fabric’s long enough, who’s to know what’s happening below? Or wearing a frightening formal frock to a friend’s flat for a baby play date. This happens for one of three reasons.

Firstly, the longing to wear something smart is palpable when you are perpetually covered in baby goo.

Secondly, that cute dress hanging in the wardrobe for a special occasion suddenly becomes the only clean option you own as baby clothes take priority in your washing machine.

Lastly, on the odd day you manage to make it out of your pyjamas before noon, the only way to truly celebrate is by cracking out a cocktail dress.

I remember the first time I managed it. The sense of achievement in getting dressed while others are halfway through their work day was parallel to the feeling of pride I got when my book was published for the first time.

It’s crazy but the clothing cravings you get when you’re with child are nuttier than pilchards and ice cream during pregnancy.
