WHAT do you buy the angler who has everything?How about a 101-year-old wooden salmon going on sale in Edinburgh next month? The fishy curiosity is modelled on a monster salmon landed by the Earl of Seafield on the River Spey in 1910.

It will go under the hammer on November 10 at the Bonhams Sporting Sale. However, you’ll need deep pockets – the carving is expected to, ahem, net £6000.

Heroes face a stuffing before games even start

YOU know Olympic fever has arrived when the knitting community gets involved.

Only days after the Olympic flame was brought to the Capital, a new kit has been released to allow fans to recreate their heroes in wool.

Edinburgh’s cycling gold medallist Chris Hoy is one of 20 sportspeople included in the Knitlympics publication.

The imaginative set even includes Hoy’s gold medals won at the Beijing games in 2008.

Though it is not clear if there is enough wool to knit your own Fatima Whitbread.

Twitter hits the bullseye

IS there anything that Twitter can’t do?

The social networking website has helped a city businessman forge links with his darts idol.

Darren Tunesi, director of recruitment firm Labour Links, “tweeted” Bristol-born darts player Chris Mason out of the blue, despite never having met him.

He wanted to provide sponsorship for the player’s comeback in the sport, an approach accepted by the player.

It means every time he features during a match on Sky Sports, the firm’s logo will appear on screen.

Mine a rich seam of tales

IT may be an activity synonymous with strikes and a merciless working environment.

But lesser known tales of coal mining will be on offer at the National Mining Museum on Friday.

They include the story of a headless miner, Joke Kane, and will be led by historic characters. A glass of wine will be provided if people need to calm their nerves.
