Why Donald Trump is worse than Guy Fawkes and Nicola Sturgeon deserves credit for rising above party politics – Helen Martin

In modern politics and history, a parliament is a legislative body of government.

Generally, a modern parliament has three functions: representing the electorate, making laws, and overseeing the government via hearings and inquiries.

That’s the simple definition of parliament on Wikipedia. It makes it sound reliable, organised and professional. Unfortunately, what scuppers it up altogether is the committed warfare of battling political parties.

I could understand that in ordinary times, when they are all trying to increase their votes and take over the ruling seats and benches.

But during massive, deadly crises such as world wars and global pandemics, isn’t it logical that they should all work together, listen to each other, share discussions and care for their country and its people – like Britain’s Second World War coalition government?

US Capitol attack is a sign that the politics of Ronald Reagan and Margaret That...

Over the past year the UK and the US have let us all down, keeping up party fights, unhindered criticism of the opposition, prioritising their own ambitions rather than focusing 100 per cent on Covid-19 and saving lives.

Donald Trump is clearly (in my view) the most uncontrollable racist, lunatic, narcissist and ignoramus who has ever been a “leader” in the western world.

Being voted out by intelligent people, he geared up his followers (who when featured on television were obviously revealed as hypnotised and idiotic gangsters) to storm Capitol Hill.

Think what happened to Guy Fawkes in 1606. His gunpowder plan failed and he was to be hung, drawn and quartered but leapt off the hanging platform, breaking his neck. Even a hundred years ago, I’d expect Trump would have been executed, having been arguably worse than Fawkes with five deaths at the Capitol.

Throughout coronavirus, he was a useless moron who ignored and disobeyed experts. That horrendous nutcase has been President of the USA. It’s incredible.

His mate was Boris Johnson, our UK leader who initially pushed for herd immunity, held back from restrictions, and now the UK is the fifth worst in the world, just four behind the US.

Our NHS and vaccination supplies are in a mess thanks to him. And it’s worth acknowledging that as well as being egotistical, ignorant, and not following the Sage and other experts, he had something more important to concentrate on throughout 2020. Brexit was his priority, not dealing with Covid-19. The result is, even if we survive, the UK will have double the debt that coronavirus would have left. We now have none of the support we would have had from the EU.

Because of the UK, Nicola Sturgeon was limited by some aspects of dealing with the virus which were controlled by the UK. But until a few weeks ago, she didn’t keep pushing for independence. She worked and discussed with the UK’s four nations focused entirely on Covid-19, and avoided slagging Johnson.

Meanwhile other Scottish parliamentary parties, Tories, Labour and Lib Dem, didn’t work helpfully with our government and our people. They slagged the SNP, complained about restrictions, economy, and issues (including care-home effects) that also happened in England.

Party fights were not parked aside until the country recovered and their committed party warfare continued.

When we survive and emerge from this, and even if Scotland gets independence, we, the UK and the US seriously need to upgrade and re-legislate how our parliaments and politicians behave.
