There is a meme doing the rounds on social media which made me smile this week.
The picture shows a car with a skeleton sitting at the wheel. The caption says, I was born and raised in Edinburgh - and I’ll probably die here too - stuck behind the wheel of my car, waiting for the traffic to move.
Traffic jams may not be as bad here as in London, but some recent surveys have placed us close behind. There’s no doubt that a combination of roadworks, growing car ownership and certain changes to road layouts have created more hold-ups.
Some of these problems are easier to accept than others.
One thing that every road user will find unforgivable is the vast number of botched roadworks. As you read this, there are more than 1,000 of them across the Capital. That’s more than 1000 roads that will have to be closed again to finish off a job that wasn’t done properly the first time. How long would you last in your job making as many mistakes as that?
The problem has been going on for years. The Scottish Road Works Commissioner needs to start handing out meaningul fines. In the meantime, we’ll do our best to embarrass the firms involved into taking action.
