And the sight of so many Union Jacks - and so few Saltires - being waved by the crowds welcoming Harry and Meghan to the Scottish Capital will irk some people too.

But the visit of the Royal couple was undoubtedly a major event in the life of the city, with well-wishers queueing for hours to get the best vantage point to see them and dozens of photographers and camera crews beaming images of the event - and of Edinburgh - around the world. Meghan’s presence added the kind of glamour and excitement that you normally only see when members of the Hollywood A list beat a path to the Social Bite cafe. So it was fitting that the pair made that one of their stops on a whirlwind tour around the city centre.

Eveyone knows these days that the publicity which accompanies events like these can help to promote a positive image around the world. Social Bite and the city as a whole would have to spend millions of pounds to get the equivalent coverage from advertising.

Maybe it was the approach of Valentine’s Day - or maybe I’m just getting soft - but what struck me most amid all the jamboree was the way Harry was so attentive to his future wife. I found that quite touching.
