Fiona Duff: Our politicians are acting like little kids now

I feel that I have hardly been out of the Roxburgh Hotel, pictured, recently. What with referendums and elections I am getting quite au fait with the little rooms at the side where I pop in to put my X in some box or another.

So let’s all pause for a moment and take a stand on all this nonsense. Although I have nothing against the hotel as such, I am sick of all these decisions I keep having to make. Actually, I am sick of reading about political arguments every time I open a newspaper or listening to them when I switch on the television. I mean there’s always a case for both sides and statistics to back up any side of a debate.

On top of all this there’s the time and effort wasted. Should all these politicians roaming the country, pressing the flesh and giving interviews not actually be working on why they were elected in the first place? The NHS needs to be sorted out and education is in a bit of a state. Who on earth is keeping their eye on the economy or trying to track down dodgy tax evaders when they all seem more intent on calling each other liars? Basically, the people who are being paid to run our country are behaving like a bunch of schoolkids arguing in the playground. It is just rather unnecessary.

Then there’s the money that has been spent. OK, not as much as those daft American politicians, but still a heck of a lot. It’s at times like these that I wish that I owned a printing company. Vast acres of forests must have been felled and gallons of ink used to produce all the leaflets that are clogging up my letterbox.

So can we have a moratorium on having to make a choice in a polling station for at least four and a bit years? Can’t the people elected to make important decisions do that and not try and fob it off onto the general public.
