Karen Koren: Get in the festive spirit with Mr Egg

While it may be getting increasingly baltic in the Capital, things are really beginning to warm up for Edinburgh's winter offerings!

It’s officially panto season and I was at the press night of Cinderella at the King’s last night, with the wonderful trio of Andy Grey, Allan Stewart and Grant Stott. It’s a laugh a minute with these stalwarts of the Edinburgh scene, you can’t fault their camaraderie and camp jokes, it’s the pantomime not to miss.

In fact, I was surprised to see that they had already announced the trio’s panto for next year, Beauty and the Beast, hoping for ticket sales already, no doubt!

You may have had time to peruse Edinburgh’s Christmas Market, which is the biggest yet, moving up to George Street proper for the first time. Once you’ve had a wee mulled wine to warm the cockles, why not head indoors, pull up a pew and take in some fine, festive entertainment.

Patsy Cline is going great guns in the Main House at Rose Theatre in the West End with standing ovations every night.

In the Basement at The Rose this week, we’re proud to bring back the inimitable George Egg, anarchist cook and DIY chef. There really is no comic quite like him.

For those unfamiliar with him, George is a Hairy-Biker-cum-stand-up, an incredibly funny, witty man and extraordinary chef – and what he does on stage has to be seen to be believed!

Tired of the dismal food offerings in identikit hotels up and down the country, George challenged himself to make Michelin star-quality meals using only the utensils you would find in a standard motel room.

Really, he is quite something – you’ll see salmon poached in a kettle, minute steaks pressed with an iron, and utterly divine marinades and dressings made from sachets and nibbles, as you laugh all the while and, if you’re lucky, you get to try the dishes. He’s on today and tomorrow!

We also have The Comedy Show, our flagship line-up night, this Friday and Saturday, again in our new home at the Basement Theatre.

Ayrshire-born Billy Kirkwood, known as a “comedy fizz bomb” will be your host and compere, as the fabulous Susie McCabe, Jamie McDonald, and the aforementioned Mr Egg take to the stage.

Come join us and get into the festive spirit.
