Reading today’s announcement that the Australian singer and style icon is to appear at Edinburgh Castle next July was probably enough for it to pop into your mind. Her signature tune might just be the catchiest track in pop history. Once you’ve heard it, you literally can’t get it out of your head.

With the Spice Girls playing Murrayfield a few weeks earlier and the expectation that the successful Summer Sessions will return to Princes Street Gardens, it means Edinburgh will be in the musical limelight next summer more than it has been for years.

She may have been closer to her crowd-pulling peak when she last played Edinburgh at the MTV Awards 15 years ago, but Kylie remains a huge international star. Madonna is the only female artist to score more UK number ones.

It’s a coup for the Capital to attract another star who you would normally expect to have to travel to Glasgow to see.

And it shows the huge pulling power that playing at Edinburgh Castle - either on the Esplanade or in the Gardens - holds for the world’s biggest name acts. That bodes well for the future.
