Leader: '˜Unsung stars have moment in spotlight'

IT was the night when the everyday heroes of Edinburgh and the Lothians had their moment in the spotlight.

Last night’s glittering Local Hero awards at the Assembly Rooms was once again a fantastic event recognising the very best of our area.

The overall winner was deservedly Dean Reilly, from Newcraighall, in recognition of his bravery and outstanding fundraising efforts after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Dean has raised thousands of pounds for the MS Society Scotland and has vowed he will continue to fundraise for as long as he can.

He’s a real inspiration and a very worthy winner.

Terri Smith, who scooped Young Inspirational Adult of the Year, meanwhile, dedicates hours of her time to volunteering in the community despite receiving treatment for a brain tumour.

The night was full of such stories and the room packed with remarkable people.

There were the unsung heroes, working tirelessly behind the scenes every day, often without the recognition they deserve.

Others played key roles in the community – working long hours with the emergency services to save people’s lives or helping children to reach their full potential.

Some were recognised for raising money for charity, fighting for their community or making sacrifices for their neighbours.

They all had one thing in common. A real concern for others.

It reminds us of the best of Edinburgh and again just what a fantastic city we have.

Yes, we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, bursting with culture and things to do.

But it is the people who truly make a city and in this regard Edinburgh really is blessed.
