Letters: Council is backing right plan for Portobello setts

One reader has praised the council for their backing of the Council setts and supporting what people voted for.

I refer to your article in Wednesday’s edition about Brighton Place (‘Relaying of Porty setts to take 60 weeks’ September 26), which followed Helen Martin’s opinion piece about the same essential road repairs (News, September 24) and several other articles over the years.

You claim that the works in Brighton Place will cost £1.2m when the updated tendered cost is below £700,000. You also fail to mention that the resurfacing of Brighton Place is in accordance with the city-wide council policy and that many people support setted streets, as evidenced by the results of the council survey.

The works are expected to take less than 60 weeks and it is planned that there will be a break for Christmas from 1 December, so Portobello town centre will be open for business.

The council has put together a package of support for businesses and local residents during the period of closure.

I hope the Evening News will play its part in bringing the community together to support local shops and promote the many quality traders we have in Portobello.
