Park-and-ride plan to be unveiled

Plans for an expansion of the Hermiston park-and ride-facility are set to be unveiled.

The city council has lodged a “proposal of application notice” for the expansion of the Riccarton Mains Road site, which will be discussed by councillors at a meeting next week.

The Evening News revealed in July that the council earmarked a site east of the road that could allow expansion from 450 spaces to 1025.

A report going to Wednesday’s meeting of the development management sub-committee confirmed that the extra land totals 19,200 square metres and indicates that the road would be re-routed to the east of the park-and-ride site and link the two roundabouts at Riccarton Mains Road and Calder Road.

A consultation event was held at the facility on August 24 and 25, while layout drawings were displayed at three libraries.

However, the proposed site is within Edinburgh’s green belt, and John Bury, head of planning at the council, said that a statement will need to be provided to justify development on the land. The full proposals for the site are expected to be lodged in the coming months.

Other park-and-ride sites run by the council are at Ferrytoll, Ingliston, Sheriffhall, Newcraighall and Straiton.
