“The smell got stronger and a little bit more along the road, something went bang under the car.

“I stopped behind them to make sure they were OK, and the lady in the back of the car was panicking a bit because she couldn’t open the door.”

Conner went round to the drivers side, where the driver was climbing out the car understandably shocked.

He continued: “I was able to unlock the doors from the drivers side so that both of the ladies were out of the car, and their wee dog.

“I was about to ask if I could call someone for them when a flame came out from below the car, so I phoned the fire service.”

Conner stood and waited with the women until the fire engines arrived, using his spare coat that was in the boot of his car to keep them warm.

He modestly concluded: “I just did what any kind road user would have done really.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Wholeflats Road.

"Nobody was hurt in the incident.”
