Davie Whigham, a retired policeman, was horrified to find that Obie was not waiting for him at his home in Harburn on Wednesday afternoon.

"I came home at about 4pm to find Obie was missing from the kennel.

"The other two dogs were in there, but the door was open and I thought maybe he had escaped.

"They are wonderful dogs, incredibly loyal and well-behaved.

"There’s just no need for this kind of thing whatsoever.

"He’s part of our family, that’s why he’s got to come back.

"He’s a fit little thing and loves his life in the countryside. He’s a working dog and we’ve done so many Munros together.”

His social media post asking for Obie’s return was shared thousands of times by concerned onlookers.

It was announced tonight on Facebook by Mr Whigham’s daughter that her father was en route to collect Obie, and he would soon be back home where he belongs.

She said: “ OBI HAS BEEN FOUND IN PENRITH

“My dads on his way to get him. Thanks to everyone who’s shared and commented! Xx”

Police confirmed on Thursday morning that enquiries into the incident were ongoing.
