The boy, known only as Alex, was treated to several police vehicles sounding their sirens and blue flashing lights as he went outside for his daily exercise.

Edinburgh Police North East’s official twitter account posted a video this afternoon showing the drive by, which was led by two police motorcyclists followed by two cars and a van.

The tweet read: “#Coronavirus lockdown meant Alex had to cancel his 8th birthday party. Alex never complained and knew he had to #StayHomeSaveLives. We found out where he walked for his daily exercise and surprised him. Happy Birthday Alex. We are all in this together. #staysafe.”

Events such as children’s birthday parties are currently not allowed under the Government’s tight social distancing restrictions, which prevent visits to people in different households unless for purposes such as helping a vulnerable person by bringing them food or medicine.

Police have been asked for any further details about why the drive-past may have been organised for Alex.
