PLANS to turn the former Picture House on Lothian Road into one of Edinburgh’s biggest superpubs have been backed by planners.
Officials have recommended an application from JD Wetherspoon to change the use of the building to a pub be granted, with councillors set to vote on the matter on Wednesday.
Music lovers have blasted the decision to allow one of the capital’s last remaining city centre venues to disappear, while alcohol charities warned that greater availability of drink could further blight an area already feeling the effects of drunken behaviour.
Callum Mouat, a musician who helped organise a petition against the loss of the music venue, said: “We managed to delay it, but it just goes to show that this is a business decision, rather than being about what people want.”
A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said: “We are keen to develop pubs at both these sites in Edinburgh. The matter is now in the hands of city planners to decide.”
