Edinburgh Yes campaigners have announced plans to stage a ‘Short Walk to Freedom’ march to a polling station on the day of the referendum vote.

A poster shared on social media details plans by the Yes Craigmillar/Niddrie group details plans to stage marches from Peffermill Court to the nearest polling station at 11am, 3pm and 7pm.

The poster reads: “The Pied Piper of Niddrie invites all Yes voters to take part in the march to the short walk to freedom.”

It goes on: “Let’s all be Bravehearts!”

The poster also quotes Abraham Lincoln, saying: “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not themselves.”

However, the proposed event was critcised by Lothians Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale, who said it was “grossly distasteful” and could be “intimidating”.

“I think the vast majority of people in Edinburgh want to just go to the Polling station peacefully and cast a vote for whatever they ve decided is in the best interests of Scotland, their families and themselves,” she said.

“A march that compares scotland’s debate with Mandela’s march for freedom to me is grossly distasteful and offensive. To others, it might feel intimidating.

“I hope the organisers will rethink their plans and let everyone in Craigmillar and Niddrie exercise their democratic right in peace.”
