FOOD and kennel costs for the dog section at Lothian and Borders Police came to more than £11,000 last year, figures show.

Veterinary bills for the dogs added another £10,000 to the cost of the animals’ upkeep.

The combined total represents a fall on the previous year when £32,000 was spent.

The force uses German shepherds and Belgian shepherds for general duties while its specialist search dogs include English springer spaniels, cocker spaniels and labradors.
