a PROBE is continuing into a tragic accident in which a toddler died after falling into a hot tub.

Eighteen-month-old Sophie Mallin died after the incident in the garden of her family home in Bathgate, West Lothian.

She was taken to the Sick Kids in Edinburgh on Sunday, but died the following day.

Police confirmed they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Safety chiefs today said parents with hot tubs should take precautions.

Peter Cornall, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident’s head of leisure safety, said: “When outdoor features such as hot tubs and temporary paddling pools are not in use, it is a good idea to keep them free of water.

“If a hot tub is in use, then keep a cover over the top which is child-proof. Large pools in particular should have child-proof fences around them with lockable gates.”
