MP seeks clarification over ‘super-barracks’

EDINBURGH West Liberal Democrat MP Mike Crockart is seeking a meeting with Defence Secretary Philip Hammond amid speculation that controversial plans to close Army bases in the Capital will be abandoned.

The Ministry of Defence is said to be poised to scrap proposals for a new £400 million “super-barracks” at Kirknewton.

It is understood that would mean a reprieve for either Dreghorn or Redford barracks, both currently earmarked for closure, and also the retention of the Craigiehall headquarters near Cramond.

Mr Crockart said: “Unanswered questions over the viability of the new base and the need for it have been piling up for the last seven months. I certainly hope that the 400-year history between our capital and the military can continue.

“Local communities like Dalmeny and Colinton will breathe a sigh of relief if the current uncertainty is lifted.

“Of course this is true for army families alike who have had little information.

“The closure of the Craigiehall HQ would have a significant impact on civilians currently employed there. 103 civilian roles would be lost in Edinburgh West in addition to a loss of 89 military jobs.”
