The problem resulted from a fault to an underground cable in St Leonard's Street at about 3pm.

Scottish Power Energy Networks have tweeted that the EH8, EH9 and EH16 areas of the city are all affected. This includes parts of the Southside, Newington and Canongate, Marchmont and Blackford, and Liberton, Craigmillar and Niddrie.

However, a Scottish Power spokeswoman said that only pockets of customers have been affected within these areas and that not everyone's power would have gone out completely - with flickering lights being a reported issue.

The spokeswoman said that, currently, less than 100 customers are affected and that engineers hope to restore full power any time from now.

She added: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
