The shortage affected postcodes in EH1, EH4, EH6 and EH7, and turned off lights on Annandale Street, including the bus garage, Leith Walk and Elm Row to McDonald Road.

Several loud alarms could be heard going off because of the power cut.

“It’s total darkness and the alarms are going nuts,” said one local resident.
