A SUPPORT worker at Scotland’s national deaf school who was found guilty of groping a 16-year-old boy at a birthday party has been handed a two-year probation order.

William Docherty – a communication support worker at Donaldson’s School in Linlithgow – was placed on the sex offenders’ register after Sheriff Derek O’Carroll reached his guilty verdict at Falkirk Sheriff Court last month.

The 42-year-old will remain under supervision for the next two years.

The court heard last month how Docherty’s victim, now 20, was left “upset and sick” by the assault, during which he was groped and asked if he wanted to accompany the teacher to his hotel.

Bosses at Donaldson’s have undertaken a probe into their handling of the affair after it emerged Docherty was not suspended from his post until last year, even though the victim’s mother made a report to the school at the time of the assault in 2009.

School managers said their internal review was ongoing and that they would report back in due course.
