Pupils to watch film on dangers of drink

EVERY school pupil over the age of 16 in Edinburgh is to be shown a video highlighting the dangers of under-age drinking ahead of new laws coming into effect for licensed premises.

The ‘Is It Worth It?’ campaign is being led by Unight, the scheme which links together the city’s late licence venues to ban troublemakers and tackle harmful drinking.

Legislation comes into force on October 1 that makes it mandatory for licensed premises to check the age of anyone buying alcohol who looks younger than 25.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill was today set to visit Portobello High School to join sixth year pupils as they watched a presentation by Unight.

Mr MacAskill said: “Edinburgh Unight have already done a lot of good work throughout the city to tackle problem drinking in pubs and clubs and this latest campaign to get the message into schools on the dangers of alcohol and the associated risks is extremely welcome.”
